Big Green Egg is an American manufacturer of tandoor ovens, founded in 1974 by Ed Fisher.
The company's history dates back to 1974, when an American serviceman and entrepreneur noticed how much better food tasted when cooked in domed clay ovens called "kamados." The "kamado" originated in Japan. He began making similar kamado-like devices and importing them for his friends and partners. He then decided to open a store in Atlanta selling similarly simple devices made of fireclay, using similar materials, following the Japanese example. Despite the great results, these devices only lasted a few years. Ed, along with qualified engineers, began meticulously studying the necessary ceramic coating composition. Since then, Big Green Egg has become the largest manufacturer of grill ovens.
Grill ovens are superior to gas, electric, and charcoal grills. A key feature is the ability to cook food both on a grill and in a tandoor. The latter method has several advantages: less risk of burning, more juicy food, fewer nutritional losses, quick cooking time, easy cleaning of the tandoor, no need for constant supervision, and the ability to cook outdoors in any weather conditions.
